Captain America: Brave New World Hits Key Box Office Benchmark

With Captain America: Brave New World still in theaters, attention has turned to its overall box office performance and financial outlook. The film opened with a strong start over Presidents Day weekend last month, contributing significantly to early 2025 domestic totals. In the weeks following, it continued to add to its global earnings, surpassing $400 million worldwide.

Captain America: Brave New World crosses $400 million, but may not break even

Captain America 4 has earned more than $400 million globally at the box office.

The film has grossed $192 million domestically and $208 million internationally, bringing the worldwide total to over $400 million. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opened on February 14, 2025, across 4,105 theaters and earned around $88 million in its opening weekend.

According to Deadline and Box Office Mojo, the film had a $100 million four-day opening over Presidents Day weekend, with 5.7 million viewers reportedly attending in the first three days. The opening ranked as the fourth-biggest ever for Presidents Day weekend. IMAX screenings, which accounted for 10.4% of the 3-day earnings, generated $9.2 million, while combined PLF and IMAX formats made up 37% of the business.

It was reported that the production budget for Captain America 4 was $180 million. The global break-even point for the film is said to be approximately $425 million, indicating the film may fall short of profitability and potentially be classified as a box office flop. The film received a B- CinemaScore, which is one of the lowest for any Marvel Cinematic Universe release.

The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. The story centers on his involvement in an international conflict. Marketing efforts reportedly included $22 million in linear TV ads. Cross-promotions featured brands such as Tide, Microsoft Copilot, McDonald’s, and Peloton. AMC Disney Springs in Orlando recorded the highest individual venue gross, with over $172,000.

The film debuted at number one domestically and held that position for multiple weeks. At the time of writing, it added $4.1 million over the weekend domestically. Despite reaching over $400 million globally, its path to profitability remains uncertain.
