The Last of Us Season 2 Trailer Sets Massive Viewership Record

Viewers prove to be looking forward to The Last of Us Season 2, as the official trailer — released on Saturday, March 8, at SXSW — broke massive viewership records and has become HBO and Max’s most-watched original trailer to date.

Ahead of the upcoming season’s premiere on April 13, 2025, the recently released trailer scored impressive records and has even outperformed previous The Last of Us teasers and trailers by an at least 160% margin.

What is the viewership record for The Last of Us Season 2 trailer?

The record-breaking trailer, which was unveiled during The Last of Us panel at SXSW, has amassed a total of 158 million global views across platforms in its first three days since its release. It is now hailed as HBO and Max Original’s most-watched trailer.

Of course, with the explosive Season 1 finale, it’s hardly surprising that viewers are tuning in for the highly anticipated Season 2. The trailer saw Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller, whose decision during the Season 1 finale served as a catalyst for the tension and drama that are about to happen in Season 2.

The post-apocalyptic drama’s second season will arrive over two years after Season 1 debuted. In addition to Pascal returning as Joel, Season 2 will also see the return of Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Returning cast members also include Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria.

The second season will also introduce new faces, such as Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon, and Catherine O’Hara as Joel’ therapist as seen in the trailer.

Rounding out the cast are Alanna Ubach, Ben Ahlers, Joe Pantoliano, Hettienne Park, Robert John Burke, and Noah Lamanna.

“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” the logline reads.

The Last of Us Season 2 debuts Sunday, April 13 on HBO and Max.
