What is We Were Dangerous about?
The We Were Dangerous trailer finds a handful of teenage girls stuck on an isolated island in 1954 after being sent to a disciplinary center called the Te Motu School for Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls. The girls begin to bond with one another as they rebel against the institution’s Christian indoctrination.
The film stars Rima Te Wiata, Erana James, Nathalie Morris, and Manaia Hall. The screenplay was written by Maddie Dai, while Carthew Neal, Bill Way, Elliott Whitton and Emily Gotto serve as executive producers alongside Waititi. Morgan Waru and Polly Fryer serve as producers. The movie was filmed in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.
“I don’t think there was ever a time when society wasn’t trying to exert control over our bodies and relationships,” Stewart-Te Whiu said. “Well, guess what? Enough’s enough. It’s time to tear up the playbook. This film is a love letter to the fierce, funny, and complex bonds between women. Let’s embrace the power of girlhood. North America, are you ready?”
The Forge CEO Mark Sayre added, “ We Were Dangerous is exactly the kind of bold, urgent, and fiercely original storytelling that The Forge was built to champion. Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu’s powerful feature debut is a vital, deeply felt story of resistance, girlhood, and survival—one that resonates far beyond its period setting. We are honored to bring this remarkable film to North American audiences and can’t wait for them to experience its raw emotion, stunning performances, and unflinching vision on the big screen.”
We Were Dangerous will be released on April 4, 2025, in theaters in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Austin, and Seattle. It will then expand to additional markets on April 11, 2025.
