Black Widow’s Scarlett Johansson Comments on Natasha MCU Return Theories

Scarlett Johansson has commented on the ongoing theories about Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff’s potential MCU return.

Johansson played Natasha Romanoff in a number of Marvel Studios projects, the most recent being 2021’s Black Widow. That movie was set before the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which ultimately saw the character meet her demise.

Since then, fans have speculated about whether or not Black Widow will return in some capacity, as bringing dead characters back to life isn’t necessarily new territory for Marvel.

Johansson, however, is saying that, despite what fans want to believe, Natasha is dead and won’t be coming back.

What did Scarlett Johansson say about Black Widow’s potential MCU return?

“Natasha is dead,” Johansson told InStyle. “She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”

It’s worth noting that there have also been rumors and speculation about a potential Blonde Phantom MCU movie starring Johansson, though there’s been no official confirmation about this at this time. She is also credited as an executive producer on Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, which arrives on May 2, 2025.

In the meantime, Johansson will soon be seen in another big franchise movie, Jurassic World Rebirth, which opens in the United States on July 2, 2025, from Universal Pictures. Directed by Gareth Edwards, that movie also stars Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and more.

In addition to Black Widow and Avengers: Endgame, Johansson has appeared in MCU projects such as 2010’s Iron Man 2, 2012’s The Avengers, 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. All of those movies are available to stream on Disney+.
