DC’s Lanterns Cast: Nicole Ari Parker Joins Aaron Pierre in Key Role

Lanterns continues to expand its cast, building excitement for DC’s upcoming live-action series. Nicole Ari Parker joins as Bernadette, adding depth alongside Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. Meanwhile, anticipation grows as the series shapes up to be a major addition to the DC Universe.

Nicole Ari Parker cast as John Stewart’s mother in DC’s Lanterns series

Nicole Ari Parker has been cast in HBO’s DC Studios drama series Lanterns, taking on the recurring role of Bernadette, the mother of John Stewart, Variety reported. Parker, known for her role in And Just Like That, will return for the show’s third season later this year on Max.

Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler portrays Hal Jordan. Both serve as members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic force that defends the cosmos with powerful rings.

The character description calls Bernadette “formidable and tenacious.” It states that she “refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds” and remains a “fiercely protective mother” devoted to her family’s well-being. DC Studios developed Lanterns as its first live-action series under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairmen and CEOs. HBO picked up the series in June 2024 and ordered eight episodes.

Chris Mundy, known for True Detective and Ozark, will be overseeing the development of the series, serving as its showrunner and executive producer. Other confirmed cast members include Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, who will portray the Green Lantern villain Sinestro.

HBO has not announced an official premiere date for Lanterns. Ryan Reynolds previously portrayed Hal Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern. John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes and a former military veteran, will appear in the series. Notably, Nathan Fillion will portray Green Lantern / Guy Gardner in Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, which premieres on July 11, 2025.
