Mickey 17’s Box Office Opens Short of Opening Predictions
Mickey 17‘s box office has reached a key milestone as its international rollout continues. Early predictions suggested a slow start, and that continues to be the case. Furthermore, profitability remains a challenge. Meanwhile, Captain America: Brave New World and Last Breath stay competitive, shaping the current box office landscape.
Mickey 17’s box office goes past $50 million worldwide
Mickey 17 has surpassed the $50 million mark at the global box office, bringing its worldwide total to $53.3 million as of its latest weekend.
The film, directed by Bong Joon Ho and led by Robert Pattinson, had a production budget of $118 million after U.K. tax credits (via Deadline). It opened with $19.1 million domestically and $43.6 million internationally across 66 markets, falling short of the predicted $20 million opening in North America and $45 million opening overseas.
Before that, the film performed well in South Korea last week, earning $9 million in its first weekend there. This marked the best opening for a Warner Bros. film in the country since 2019. Its international rollout included major markets like Italy, China, Spain, Germany, Australia, the U.K., and France.
Mickey 17 had a $2.5 million preview night in the U.S. across 3,200 locations before its official wide release. It outperformed previous sci-fi films like Ad Astra, which earned $1.5 million in previews before a $19 million opening. However, it remained below Blade Runner 2049, which had a $3.5 million preview night, leading to a $32.7 million debut.
The film’s release strategy included a significant presence in premium formats such as IMAX and PLF, which accounted for 48% of its weekend earnings. IMAX alone generated $3 million domestically, contributing 16% of the total weekend revenue. Audience demographics showed that 65% of ticket buyers were male, with 38% of the audience in the 25-34 age range.
Although the film has received strong critical acclaim, with a 78% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73% audience score, its box office trajectory suggests challenges in reaching its estimated break-even range of $240-300 million.
