Mamma Mia! 3 Update: Amanda Seyfried Confirms Sequel in the Works

Amanda Seyfried has confirmed that a Mamma Mia! 3 movie is in the works.

Mamma Mia! was released in 2008. The jukebox musical was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and sees Seyfried play Sophie Sheridan, while Meryl Streep stars as Donna Sheridan. It was followed by 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

While there’s been much talk about a potential third Mamma Mia! movie, Seyfried has now confirmed that it’s happening.

What did Amanda Seyfried say about Mamma Mia! 3?

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight in a video shared on Reddit, Seyfried shared an update about the next Mamma Mia! sequel.

“Mamma Mia! 3 is happening,” she said. “It’s going to happen in Greece, hopefully before 2038.”

Seyfried confirmed that they haven’t started filming the movie at this time. She said that she’d “ideally” like to go into production in the summer of 2026, though she also noted that’s just because of her schedule.

“It’s going to have to take a lot of people’s schedules aligning and the story being right,” she said.

Mamma Mia! is based on the 1999 stage musical of the same name. The first movie also stars Pierce Brosnan as Sam Carmichael, Colin Firth as Harry Bright, Stellan Skarsgård as Bill Anderson, Julie Walters as Rosie Mulligan, and Dominic Cooper as Sky Rymand.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, meanwhile, serves as both a sequel and a prequel. Lily James plays a younger version of Donna in that movie, while Streep and Seyfried also reprise their respective roles. Firth, Cooper, Skarsgård, Brosnan, and Walters also returned for Here We Go Again, while the cast also includes Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, Andy García, Josh Dylan, Alexa Davies, and more.

A release date for Mamma Mia! 3 has not yet been announced. The first Mamma Mia! movie is currently streaming on Max, while Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is available to rent or purchase on streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
