Resident Evil Release Date Set for Barbarian Director’s Horror Remake Movie

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie has been given a release date.

It was announced last month that Zach Cregger, known for making the hit 2022 horror movie Barbarian starring Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård, had been tapped to write and direct a new Resident Evil movie. While it wasn’t immediately clear who would distribute the movie, the project has landed at Sony Pictures.

When is the release date for the new Resident Evil movie?

Per Deadline, Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot will be released in United States theaters on September 18, 2026.

Plot details for the film remain under wraps at this time; although, Deadline’s article does note that the movie “apparently harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.” Shay Hatten co-wrote the script with Cregger.

Prior to Barbarian, Cregger co-directed 2009’s Miss March and 2011’s The Civil War on Drugs with Trevor Moore. He recently served as a producer on 2025’s Companion, and he’s got another movie, Weapons, that’s also coming out next year. Dated for January 16, 2026, that movie stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and more.

No casting for the Resident Evil reboot has been announced. Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, and Miri Yoon are producing the movie, as are Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions.

“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” Cregger said.

Kulzer added, “The world of Resident Evil experienced through Zach’s vision is an irresistible feat.”

“Zach is one of the most talented, exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026,” said Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group’s Sanford Panitch.
