Harry Potter HBO Show Finds Its Minerva McGonagall Actress

After finding its Dumbledore and Snape, the upcoming Harry Potter HBO show may have officially found its Minerva McGonagall.

Who is playing Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter HBO show?

According to a new report from Deadline, Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer is in negotiations to play the part of Professor Minerva McGonagall. McTeer is a highly decorated actress on screen and on the stage and has starred in projects like Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs (both of which earned her Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively).

In the world of Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall is one of the central figures at the heart of the story. A professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she also acts as head of Gryffindor House and deputy headmistress below Dumbledore.

Assuming McTeer closes on the deal, she’ll join a cast that steadily continues to grow. Recently, John Lithgow was reported to have been cast as Albus Dumbledore in the series. Paapa Essiedu was also previously reported to have been cast as Professor Severus Snape, which Deadline has confirmed in their report on McTeer.

The Harry Potter series is described as a “decade-long” project, with each season expected to adapt one book in Rowling’s acclaimed book series. At the moment, the casting search for the next Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley is still underway in the U.K. and Ireland. The chosen child actors must be aged 9 to 11 in April 2025, teasing its potential production start date.

It’s unclear as of now who else will be in the cast, although rumors have circulated about other potential castings, including the likes of Voldemort.

The HBO adaptation is being written by Emmy-winning-producer Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession). The series is executive produced by Gardiner, Mark Mylod, Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and long-time Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. Mylod, who has worked with HBO on Games of Thrones and The Last of Us, will also helm multiple episodes. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
