Florence Pugh: Thunderbolts* Is an ‘A24-Feeling Assassin Movie’

Florence Pugh says that Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is an “A24-feeling assassin movie.”

Thunderbolts* releases in United States theaters this coming May. Directed by Jake Schreier, the MCU film has an ensamble cast that includes Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, and more.

What did Florence Pugh say about Thunderbolts*?

Pugh said of Thunderbolts* when speaking with Empire Magazine, “It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.”

Schreir previously served as an executive producer and director on the first season of Netflix’s Beef with Steven Yeun and Alin Wong, which was an A24 production.

“There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different,” Schreir said. “There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”

Beyond Beef, Schreir directed 2012’s Robot & Frank and 2015’s Paper Towns. He’s helmed episodes of Shameless, Lodge 49, Kidding, Dave, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, among other titles.

In addition to Belova, Stan, and Russell, the cast of Thunderbolts* includes David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, and Lewis Pullman as Bob.

“In Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker,” the synopsis reads. “After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* will be released in United States theaters on May 2, 2025, as the final film of Phase Five of the MCU.
