Mickey 17’s Global Box Office Predicted to Have a Slow Opening

With Mickey 17 fast approaching its theatrical release date, early predictions for the film indicate a lukewarm opening at the global box office. Helmed by Bong Joon-ho, the sci-fi dark comedy revolves around Robert Pattinson’s Mickey, who agrees to travel to the icy planet of Niflheim as a disposable employee. Every time he ends up dying due to the harsh conditions of the foreign land, he regenerates in a new body, all the while retaining his memories. While the movie has already received highly positive reviews, current estimations seem to indicate that it will take some time for Joon-ho’s latest directorial venture to excel on the financial front.

Mickey 17 estimated to make just $45 million at global box office opening

Mikey 17 is presently on track to premiere to an estimated $45 million opening at the global box office.

Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, the flick carries a sizeable production budget of $118 million after UK tax credits, per Deadline. Consequently, certain sources have coined a minimum return of $240 million-$300 million for the Robert Pattinson-led project to break even.

Nevertheless, Mickey 17 has kicked off its run at the international box office on a positive note, amassing $9 million upon its release in Korea last weekend. The release marks the best return for a Warner Bros. movie since 2019 in the country, suggesting signs of promise.

The film’s global premiere will reportedly occur in 66 offshore markets with a combined theatre count of 28,500 across locations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, China, and Australia. Additionally, Mickey 17 is estimated to complete an opening of $25 million at the international box office as well as a $20 million opening at the domestic box office.

So far, Bong Joon-ho’s much-awaited feature has garnered immense praise from critics, with early reviews calling it a “masterpiece.” Led by Robert Pattinson, with Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, and Naomi Ackie rounding up the supporting cast, Mickey 17 hits the big screens on March 7, 2025.
