MOPPAN drags TikTok influencer, Ahmed Pasali to court over alleged defamation
The Motion Picture Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN) has taken legal action against popular TikTok influencer Ahmed Pasali, accusing him of defamation and tarnishing the reputation of Kannywood.
Pasali appeared before the Upper Area Court in Kasuwar Nama, Jos, on Monday to face trial over allegations stemming from a video he posted on social media.
The video, MOPPAN claims, contained statements that discredited Kannywood actors and filmmakers.
During the court session, the charges were read to Pasali, including defamation and harming the image of Kannywood members.
He, however, pleaded not guilty. His legal counsel immediately applied for bail.
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense, Judge Thomas Nakowa granted bail but set strict conditions, including a ₦250,000 payment, a surety who owns a house in Jos with valid documents, and the signature of a MOPPAN member as a guarantor.
Since Pasali was unable to meet the conditions immediately, he was remanded in a correctional facility.
Speaking on the case, MOPPAN’s national president, Malam Umaru Maikudi Cashman, stated that the association would not tolerate defamatory statements against its members.
“We will take a firm stand against anyone who spreads falsehoods or tarnished the reputation of Kannywood,” he said.
The case has been adjourned until April 5 for further hearings.
