The Defenders MCU Return Being Explored, According to Head of Marvel TV

With Daredevil now officially in the MCU, the rest of Netflix’s The Defenders could be following him in the future, according to the head of Marvel TV.

What do we know about a potential The Defenders MCU return?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series coming to Disney+, head of Marvel TV Brad Winderbaum was asked if there were any plans to ever bring back the likes of Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, or Finn Jones’ Iron Fist — the group that comprised The Defenders in Netflix’s original show — like they did Daredevil.

Winderbaum didn’t commit to anything, but did note that the team at Marvel TV are excited to be able to play in the “sandbox” that is the world of the Netflix shows. He also mentioned that, even though they can’t do whatever they please like in a comic book, they have taken those “variables into account” and are “very much exploring” the possibility.

“I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you that it’s so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum responds. “Obviously, we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book, [where] if you can draw it, you can do it. We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

The Defenders originally premiered in 2017 on Netflix, and saw a group form that was comprised of various other characters from the streamer’s Marvel related projects. The series was set after the second season of Daredevil, and followed Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all coming together to team up and take on the Hand in New York City.

Although it’s unclear whether or not anyone from the other Netflix projects will appear, several seem ready to do so. Krysten Ritter — who played Jessica Jones — said in December that she was more than ready to step back into the role, and even jokingly called on Winderbaum to get the ball rolling.

“Brad Winderbaum said that? That’s really exciting to hear. Isn’t that the guy who makes the call?” Ritter said. “Come on, Brad! Let’s get it going. Let’s do it. I’ll be ready,” said Ritter during an interview when told that Winderbaum would like to see Jones return.
