Netflix‘s adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has officially found a new director, with Deadline reporting that a new filmmaker has been tapped to helm the project.

According to Deadline, Maggie Betts (The Burial) has officially joined the project and will direct the upcoming film. Betts will co-write the script alongside Liz Tigelaar.

Betts will step into the film that was originally set to be directed by Leslye Headland. However, Headland revealed that she was no longer attached to the project during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo centers around a legendary Hollywood actress who has enlisted an up-and-coming reporter to tell her life story. The film will chronicle Evelyn Hugo’s rise to fame during the Golden Age of Hollywood, as well as the sacrifices she made to get to the top.

The film is based on the hit historical fiction novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was published in 2017. The book spent 120 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list, and has become a major hit across readers on social media, particularly TikTok.

The movie will be executive produced by Reid and Margaret Chernin, with Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn of Circle of Confusion set as producers.
