Niger junta plans national dialogue on democratic transition

Niger’s military authorities have announced plans to hold a major conference on the country’s transition to democracy.

This is coming nearly two years after ousting elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

The four-day event, scheduled for this February, will provide recommendations to the head of the ruling junta, General Abdourahamane Tiani, BBC Hausa reports.

The organizing committee is expected to compile and present its findings in a report due in March.

Niger is one of several Sahel nations where the military has seized power.

Alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, the country has distanced itself from France and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), aligning with its neighbors in a new regional bloc.
