Police officer commits suicide in Niger

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Shafi’u Bawa, has reportedly taken his own life in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when Bawa’s father, Usman Bawa, discovered his son hanging from the ceiling inside his room.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command stated that the matter was reported around 2:10 p.m. by the deceased officer’s father.

A statement from the command partly reads “Today, Saturday, 08/02/25, at approximately 14:10 hours, one Mr Usman Bawa of Rigasa area in Kontagora reported that his son, AP/No 337979, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling.
“The lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where he was pronounced dead”

His body has been released to his family to conduct his final rites.
