Happy Face Trailer Shows Dennis Quaid as a Notorious Serial Killer

Dennis Quaid puts on a Happy Face in the newly released trailer for Paramount+’s upcoming true crime drama.

Happy Face is scheduled to premiere its first two episodes on March 20, followed by new episodes weekly. The upcoming eight-episode series will chronicle the harrowing true story of Melissa G. Moore, who — at a young age — discovered her father Keith Hunter Jesperson was the notorious Happy Face Killer.

The series is based on Moore’s true-crime podcast and autobiography Shattered Silence, co-written by M. Bridget Cook. It hails from the producers of Your Honor and The Good Wife.

What happens in the Happy Face trailer?

The trailer introduces Moore (portrayed by Annaleigh Ashford), who reveals on national television that her father is the Happy Face killer. The real-life Happy Face Killer, who got his nickname by drawing smiley faces on his letters to the media and authorities, had killed at least eight women during the early 1990s. He is currently serving life without parole.

The official synopsis reads: “Inspired by a true-life story, Happy Face tells the story of Melissa Reed, daughter of Keith Jesperson, aka the Happy Face Killer. After decades of no contact, Keith forces his way back into his daughter’s life, and Melissa must find out if an innocent man is going to be put to death for a crime her father committed. In the process, she must face a reckoning of her own identity.”
