A total of 44 persons were on Saturday arrested in Umuahia during the January edition of monthly sanitation in Abia State.
The defaulters were arrested in different parts of the city by government task force teams for disobeying Abia State government’s basic environmental laws and arraigned before a mobile court.
Out of the 44 alleged defaulters, 39 persons were prosecuted by the mobile court, four were released due to their health conditions while one person was discharged for being an essential worker.
Speaking to journalists after the clean up exercise, Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna expressed satisfaction with the compliance level exhibited by Umuahia residents, except in Ahiukwu Olokoro market where traders were seen trading during the environmental sanitation hours.
The commissioner said that Abia was regarded as the dirtiest state in Nigeria before the administration of Governor Alex Otti changed the negative status.
He added that monitoring of compliance level would henceforth be extended to rural areas.
