Multiple accident claims 12 lives in Kwara
At least 12 persons perished and others were injured in a multiple auto crash on Wednesday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.
The crash, involving a trailer with registration number AYE 218XC and another vehicle with registration number TTN 556 XA, occurred at the Oko-Olowo area on the Ilorin-Jebba highway at about 5:35 p.m.
The two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, according to eyewitness accounts.
Reports indicated that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was transporting cows and human passengers from Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, to Ogbomoso, Oyo state, while the trailer was said to be traveling from Lagos to Kano.
Emergency responders and police officers from the ‘G’ Division Police Command, Oloje, reportedly arrived at the scene on time to take control of the situation, while the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased victims were evacuated by their families.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation; however, it was gathered that reckless driving and excessive speeding contributed to the incident.
Speaking in a telephone chat, the FRSC sector commander, Muftau Irekeola, confirmed the incident, saying, “But I am still waiting for the details from my boys in Olooru unit.”
“I am waiting for the details from my boys. It was a multiple accident involving a trailer and one Canter truck,” he added.
