Michael Ondaatje was first married to Betty Kimbark in 1963; however, this marriage ended in divorce.

He later married Kim Jones, but they eventually separated. Currently, he is partnered with novelist Linda Spalding. Ondaatje has two children from his previous relationships: Quintin and Griffin Ondaatje.

Ondaatje’s career began with poetry; he published his first collection Dainty Monsters in 1967. His literary reputation grew with subsequent works such as The Collected Works of Billy the Kid (1970) and There’s a Trick With a Knife I’m Learning to Do (1979), both of which won Governor General’s Awards.

His breakthrough novel came with The English Patient (1992), which not only won the Booker Prize but also became a significant cultural phenomenon after its film adaptation in 1996.

Other notable works include In the Skin of a Lion (1987), Anil’s Ghost (2000), and Divisadero (2007). Throughout his career, Ondaatje has also worked as an editor and teacher, influencing many aspiring writers.
