Ridley Scott Sets Bee Gees Biopic Aside Following Delay: ‘They Didn’t Like My Deal’

Ridley Scott has decided it’s time to “move on,” at least for the time being, from his Bee Gees biopic.

It was announced that Scott, who recently made Gladiator II with Paul Mescal, was going to direct a Bee Gees biopic titled You Should Be Dancing. The movie was supposed to begin filming in early 2025; however, it was announced in November 2024 that Scott will first make a different movie called The Dog Stars.

Following the announcement, Scott told Deadline that the Bee Gees movie had hit a “hiccup.” He didn’t elaborate on what the issue was at the time, though he did say he’s “hoping to return to that by the end of [2025].”

What did Ridley Scott say about his Bee Gees movie?

Speaking with GQ Magazine, Scott discussed the matter more openly and explained why he’s decided to move on to other things for the time being.

“The deal—the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott explained. “I said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did.”

Scott still hopes the issues will be worked out and that he can film the Bee Gees movie later this year; however, the project has been “set aside” for now.

“I was being asked to go too far,” he says. “And I said, ‘No. Next!’ They didn’t like my deal. So I said, I’ll move on. I’m expensive, but I’m f—ing good.”

Regarding what the movie will be about, should it get made, Scott said. “I liked the working-class side of the Bee Gees. It’s all about competition with brothers…. And then they lose Andy—Andy OD’d at 30…. It’s more about the gift than the luck, right?… It’s a fantastic story.”
