EPL: He destroyed me – Paul Scholes names player he was afraid playing against

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has recalled how he was tormented by former Russian international, Andrei Kanchelskis, in Manchester United training.

Scholes said that as 17-year-old player, he was asked to play as a left-back by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Scholes, who turned out a legendary midfielder at Old Trafford, revealed this while talking to The Daily Telegraph, adding that he was asked to play against the powerful winger who had joined from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former England international further revealed that the Russian tormented him in training and he never wanted to play as a left-back again.

“One of my first training sessions there I came out and I was maybe 17 and was asked to play left-back and the club had just signed him,” he said.

“The first team didn’t have a game so he came over. I’m no left-back. We didn’t know much about him then. We just knew he was a flying winger. He destroyed me! I couldn’t live with him!”

Both men played 10 matches together for the Red Devils and won six of those games while losing twice and drawing as many times.

Scholes played 714 matches as an attacking midfielder for the Manchester outfit scoring 153 goals and assisting 83 times.

The former England midfielder won the Premier League 11 times, also winning the UEFA Champions League twice and the FA Cup thrice, among other honors.
