EPL: What Abramovich told Drogba before buying new Chelsea striker – Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has insisted there has to be competition for the striker position in the current Chelsea team.

Mikel Obi played for the Blues between 2006 and 2017.

It was a trophy-laden period for the Nigerian, who won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Champions League and one UEFA Europa League.

During that spell, Chelsea’s attack was mostly led by Ivorian football legend, Didier Drogba.

However, the former owner of the club, Roman Abramovich splashed out on strikers like Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka and Andriy Shevchenko.

Mikel Obi has now revealed the conversation Abramovich had with Drogba before bringing in competition for his place.

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel Obi said: “Roman Abramovich explained to Drogba “you are the man, but injuries might come, dip of form, what are we going to do then?”

“Nicolas should not be angry I’m saying this, it’s for the betterment of the team and club”

“Roman every year brings in another top striker, we had Anelka come in to help Drogba, Torres, Shevchenko.

“We need someone who knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.”
