Woman, child rescued from flooded car in Shropshire

Firefighters rescued a woman and a child after their car became stranded in floodwaters near Melverley on New Year’s Day.

The incident occurred at 19:46 GMT on the Crosslanes to Argoed road. Crews from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, leading the pair to safety. Their vehicle was later retrieved by a local farmer using a tractor.

The Environment Agency, EA, reported that water levels in the River Vyrnwy remain high in the Melverley and Maesbrook areas. A flood warning indicating that flooding is expected is still in effect.

Flood alerts, which signify possible flooding, have also been issued for the River Severn in Shropshire following recent heavy rainfall.

While the EA noted that water levels are not expected to rise further, they are likely to remain elevated for some time.

In Shrewsbury, flood conditions have led to the closure of Frankwell car parks. Visitors to the town centre are advised to use alternative options such as buses, park-and-ride services, or walking and cycling.

Shropshire Council has recommended that patrons attending performances at Theatre Severn use the multi-storey car park on Raven Meadows instead.
