Kaley Cuoco to Star in HBO Comedy Series Kansas City Star From Hacks Creators
Kaley Cuoco has found her next television project. Per Deadline, Cuoco will star in Kansas City Star, a new half-hour comedy series from Hacks creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky. HBO won the rights to Kansas City Star after an extensive bidding war.
Cuoco is currently the star of Peacock’s Based on a True Story, Peacock’s dark comedy series about a true crime podcast, which returns for Season 2 on November 21, 2024. Cuoco also voices the role of Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn on Max’s animated Harley Quinn series, which is coming soon to Max.
Cuoco is best known for starring in Big Bang Theory for 12 seasons. For her role as Penny, Cuoco won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2013 Critics’ Choice Television Awards. After Big Bang Theory, Cuoco headlined Max’s The Flight Attendant for two seasons, earning three Emmy nominations.

Most of Kansas City Star’s details are under wraps. However, Deadline’s sources describe it as a “comedy with heart starring Cuoco as a semi-famous actress who returns to her hometown to work with a regional theater troupe.
Kansas City Star is expected to get a series order, though details are still being finalized. Warner Bros. Television will be the studio. Cuoco will executive produce through her Yes, Norman banner. Additional executive producers include Aniello, Downs, and Statsky.
The trio of Aniello, Downs, and Statsky are best known for creating the Max’s Hacks. The comedy series stars Jean Smart as an aging stand-up comedian who forms a professional relationship with a young comedy writer named Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder).
Premiering in 2021, Hacks has received critical acclaim for each of its three seasons. Hacks Season 3 recently won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Hacks Season 4 will premiere in 2025.
