Hulk Hogan Reveals Why His Netflix Biopic With Chris Hemsworth Got Canceled
Hulk Hogan recently explained why his Netflix biopic with Chris Hemsworth was canceled. In a podcast interview, Hogan stated that a missed payment deadline by Netflix caused the project to fall through. His comments clarify why the production, originally set to depict his wrestling career, came to an unexpected end.
Hulk Hogan says a contract issue got his biopic with Chris Hemsworth canned
In 2019, Netflix announced a Hulk Hogan biopic starring Chris Hemsworth, directed by Joker’s Todd Phillips. The film aimed to showcase Hogan’s rise from his win over The Iron Sheik to the peak of “Hulkamania.” It promised fans an in-depth look at his career.
Earlier this year, Phillips revealed that they had essentially scrapped the project but provided no further details. Now, Hogan has shed light on the reason, citing contractual missteps as the primary cause. “They kind of missed a beat in the contract,” Hogan explained during an appearance on the PBD podcast.
“There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time.” Hogan highlighted the quality of the script, penned by Joker writer Scott Silver, calling it “amazing” and noting, “When I read it, I’m like, oh my God, this is really good.”
Hogan shared that he worked closely with Silver for three years, contributing his insights into wrestling’s positive and negative sides. “Spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark,” he said, adding that this darker tone might resonate with the public’s interest in the realities of wrestling.
The script, he believed, was so powerful that it had “Oscar” potential for Hemsworth, especially given that he’d never played a real person before. Ultimately, Hogan chose to walk away from the project when Netflix missed the contractual payment deadline. “I just was moving forward at the time, and when they, business-wise, missed a date, there was an option for me to pull out and I did,” he confirmed.
Phillips, who previously expressed enthusiasm for the project, also confirmed he has no plans to revisit the shelved film. “That’s not going to come together for me,” he told Variety.
