More shake-ups expected at ABSU following Vice Chancellor’s dismissal and others

Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) is set for further changes following the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe Okeudo, along with other top officials, in alignment with recommendations from a recent visitation panel report. The newly appointed team, approved by Governor Alex Otti, includes Agwu U. Agwu as Pro-Chancellor, Mrs. Cathrine Uju Ifejika as Chancellor, and several new members across the Governing Council and other university bodies.

These appointments, effective November 1, 2024, mark the beginning of broader reforms aimed at elevating ABSU to international standards and restoring its reputation. According to a source, the state government’s full reform plan intends to transform the university, though some staff members are wary of potential executive overreach affecting the institution's autonomy.

Abia State’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed that the initial appointments are the first steps in implementing the panel's recommendations. He highlighted that the panel was tasked with assessing the university’s challenges and proposing actionable solutions, starting with restructuring the leadership.
