Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton to test for Lara Croft in Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series
Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is casting for the role of Lara Croft, with Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton set to test. Emmy-winning Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge leads the adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game franchise, now moving to live-action television. Lara Croft, previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, remains one of pop culture’s top action heroines.
Reports suggest Amazon MGM Studios considered other actors, such as Emma Corrin and Mackenzie Davis, for the role. However, neither is expected to test at this stage. Amazon MGM Studios, which secured the series rights in a deal with Crystal Dynamics, has not commented on the casting process.
Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke describes the Tomb Raider series as an “epic” and “globe-trotting” adventure (via Deadline). Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios oversee the show’s production. Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins from Wells Street Productions serve as executive producers.
Turner is widely known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s iconic show, Game of Thrones. Some of her other notable credits include Joan, The Staircase, and Survive, among many more. Lucy Boynton, recognized for Bohemian Rhapsody and Murder on the Orient Express, will next appear in A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.
The Tomb Raider series will be part of an interconnected media franchise, with planned expansions in games and other formats. This approach aims to continue Lara Croft’s legacy and maintain the franchise’s global impact.
The studio expects to announce the official casting decision by late 2024.
