Trick ‘r Treat 2: Director Michael Dougherty Is ‘Very, Very Happy’ With the Script

Michael Dougherty is “very, very happy” with the script for Trick ‘r Treat 2.

Trick ‘r Treat is an anthology horror movie that was directed by Dougherty and stars Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin, and Brian Cox. The movie was originally intended to have a 2007 theatrical release; however, after playing at a handful of festivals, it was released as a direct-to-DVD movie in 2009.

Since then, Trick ‘r Treat has gained a cult following and is now considered to be a Halloween horror classic. A sequel has been in various stages of development for many years, though it has not yet been officially greenlit.

In a new commentary for Trick ‘r Treat 4K Ultra HD edition, per Bloody Disgusting, Dougherty discusses what the current status of Trick ‘r Treat 2 is.

What did Michael Dougherty say about Trick ‘r Treat 2?

“It’s tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies,” he said. “…There aren’t the typical metrics that a studio can point to to make it an easy ‘yes.’ Something I was adamant about in the sequel was that it has to retain this nonlinear storytelling, [and] it has to retain that weird mix of horror and comedy,””

Dougherty noted that he still wants to make Trick ‘r Treat 2 and that the project isn’t “dead by any stretch.”

“We have some momentum moving in the right direction for sure, but I’m also of the belief that I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifice just to make a sequel. It has the be under the right conditions with the right resources. Otherwise, I will be content with just letting this be this weird little movie that fought its way through a lot of adversity,” he said. “…But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”

The 4K Ultra HD edition of Trick ‘r Treat is now available to purchase from Arrow Video. The film is also currently streaming on Max.
