Keep the faith — there’s a The Passion of the Christ 2 update for Mel Gibson‘s long-in-development sequel to to his 2004 biblical drama. At the moment, however, the project still has no distributor or definite release date.
What is The Passion of the Christ 2 update?
Gibson is reportedly in Malta as part of an 11-member production team, who are scouting the country for potential locations, which will be used for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. According to a recent report, they were actually invited by the Malta Film Commission. Besides Malta, the sequel will also reportedly shoot in Israel, Morocco and Italy.
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection will once again be directed by Gibson. The sequel is expected to feature Jim Caviezel, who will be reprising his role as Jesus, whose miraculous resurrection will be the center of the next installment. Last year, the Oscar-winning director teased that he has co-written two different scripts, with the first one described as “an acid trip” that will take audiences to “other realms.” It is still currently unclear which of the two scripts Gibson will end up directing.
The Passion of the Christ depicted the final days of Jesus Christ’s life and his crucifixion. It also starred Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, Francesco De Vito as Peter, Luca Lionello as Judas, and more. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was still commercial success. It earned a worldwide gross of $612 million against a reported budget of around $30 million.
