Countdown: Jensen Ackles To Lead New Thriller Drama From Prime Video

Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles has been tapped to headline Prime Video’s Countdown, an upcoming 13-episode thriller drama series from showrunner Derek Haas (One Chicago).

Deadline reported that Prime Video has greenlighted the series, with Ackles attached to lead. The project — created and executive produced by Haas — is said to be specifically developed for Ackles. This comes after Haas exited Wolf Entertainment, in which he had co-created and/or executive-produced a slew of One Chicago shows.

Countdown has received a rare series order from Amazon MGM Studios, considering most of its shows only consist of eight to 10 episodes. This makes Countdown a potentially notable project for Ackles and the studio alike.

“I love making shows that keep you on the edge of your seat with nonstop action, drama, surprises, and suspense, and I can’t wait to work with Jensen and for everyone to see Countdown,” Haas said in a statement (via Deadline).

Known for his portrayal of Dean Winchester in Supernatural and Jason Teague in Smallville, Ackles can also be seen in Big Sky, The Boys, the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters, and Tracker.

What is Prime Video’s Countdown about?

Countdown will center on LAPD officer Mark Meachum (Ackles) as he gets recruited to join the investigation into a mysterious murder.

According to the outlet, “Countdown starts following a suspicious murder in broad daylight, which leads to LAPD officer Mark Meachum being recruited to join a secret task force of undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement to investigate. But as the truth of a more sinister plot comes into focus, the team must overcome their conflicting personal agendas to unite and save a city of millions.”

Other details about the planned series remain under wraps, including the additional cast members joining Ackles.

“I had an incredible experience working with the Prime Video team on The Boys and am delighted to be able to continue that relationship on Countdown,” said Ackles. “I simply cannot wait to partner with Derek and the rest of our Countdown family to bring this story to life.”
