On Instagram, Zendaya posted a new Challengers poster for Guadagnino’s upcoming sports drama that also stars Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Josh O’Connor (Emma). “Challengers April 26th,” Zendaya’s caption reads. “Wishing you all the most beautiful new year.”

What is Challengers about?
“Tennis player turned coach Tashi (Zendaya) has taken her husband, Art (Mike Faist), and transformed him into a world-famous grand slam champion,” the official synopsis reads. “To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a ‘Challenger’ event — close to the lowest level of pro tournament — where he finds himself standing across the net from his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend (Josh O’Connor).”
Guadagnino is known for directing 2015’s A Bigger Splash, 2017’s Call Me by Your Name, 2018’s Suspiria remake, and 2022’s Bones and All. The screenplay was written by Justin Kuritzkes, who is also working with Guadagnino on a new film titled Queer, which is an adaptation of a William S. Burroughs novel that will star Daniel Craig.
Zendaya and Guadagnino both produce Challengers alongside Rachel O’Connor and Amy Pascal.
“What Luca’s really good at is finding sensuality and desire,” Zendaya previously told Empire Magazine about Challengers in January 2023. “There’s so much in just glances. The tension builds. Not having the release is a good thing sometimes.” O’Connor added, “The tennis is the sex. Those moments are so sexy. The film is dealing with the tension before and after. The sex they’re all desperate for is on the court.”
Originally planned to be released in 2023 but delayed because of the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike, Challengers now hits United States theaters on April 26, 2024.
