Back to Black Release Date Set for Amy Winehouse Biopic
Focus Features announced the Back to Black release date, confirming that the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic will release next year.
Back to Black is set to release on May 10, 2024, and will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from a script written by Matt Greenhalgh. The duo previously collaborated on 2009’s Nowhere Boy.
Marisa Abela (Industry) will star in the film as Winehouse. Other cast members set to appear in the film include Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Eddie Marsan (Fair Play), and Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).
Back to Black — named after Winehouse’s award-winning 2006 album — will offer up a “never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
The film was made with the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing and The Amy Winehouse Estate.
Winehouse was an English singer best known for her vocals and coverage various genres in her music. Her debut album, Frank, released in 2003 to critical acclaim, and her follow-up album Back to Black, released in 2006, was a smash hit. The album became one of the best-selling albums in UK history, and the single “Rehab” remains one of the most popular songs ever.
At the time, Winehouse also broke the record for most Grammy wins in a single night for a female artist, with the album taking home five awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Winehouse unfortunately passed away due to alcohol poisoning at the age of 27 in 2011.
