Insidious: The Red Door Becomes the Biggest Horror Movie of 2023 So Far
Horror is having a pretty healthy year at the box office, and even with several high-profile successes in the bag, we have a new King of the Hill because Insidious: The Red Door is the new horror box office champion of 2023.
The Patrick Wilson-helmed sequel has not only brushed past the likes of Scream VI and Evil Dead Rise, but now it has usurped previous leader M3GAN to sit atop the horror throne.
M3GAN ended its run at the worldwide box office by claiming $180.9 million but it did get some screenings at the end of 2022 factored into that. Insidious: the Red Door has just slipped past that with $182.4 million so far in just a month, making it the 27th most successful movie at the worldwide box office this year and as mentioned, the best-performing horror movie.
The Meg 2 Circling the Horror Box Office Crown
It’s good news for Insidious: The Red Door, but its reign seems like it will be short-lived as The Meg 2: The Trench has already amassed $141.9 million in a few days, so unless its box office takes a dive deep enough to hit the Mariana Trench, it’s likely to end up the new leader. Not bad considering how poorly it has been reviewed.
Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth movie in the series and reunites the original cast while bringing a few familiar demonic forces back alongside newer threats. The Lambert family is a bit older now and is forced to venture into The Further one more time to put their haunted past to rest.
While it may be a box office success, the Insidious franchise is expected to go on hiatus as a sixth entry is not currently planned for. The money The Red Door is making may change that pretty quickly, however.
