Those About to Die: Amazon Nabs Rights to Roland Emmerich’s Gladiator Drama in Multiple Countries
According to Variety, Amazon Studios has officially acquired the streaming rights to Roland Emmerich’s forthcoming gladiator drama Those About to Die in multiple countries. While the series is set to debut on Peacock for its U.S. release, Those About to Die will be available for streaming on Prime Video in Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Poland, Turkey, Andorra, Monaco, Luxembourg and Belgium.
Who’s the Cast of Those About to Die?
Those About to Die stars Anthony Hopkins as Roman Emperor Vespasian, Tom Hughes as Titus Flavianus, Sara Martins as Cala, Jojo Macari as Domitian, Gabriella Pession as Antonia, Dimitri Leonidas as Scorpus, Moe Hashim as Kwame, and Iwan Rheon as ambitious crime boss Tenax. Additional cast incude Liraz Charhi, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, Rupert Penry-Jones, Eneko Sagardoy, Pepe Barroso, Gonçalo Almeida, Kyshan Wilson, and Alicia Edogamhe.
“It is an epic drama set in the complex and corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition,” reads the synopsis. “The series introduces an ensemble of diverse characters from all parts of Roman society who collide at the intersection of sports, politics and dynasties of the ancient world.”
Those About to Die is executive produced and directed by Emmerich, with Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat writing the screenplay based on Daniel Mannix’s nonfiction book of the same name. This marks Emmerich’s first TV project in a decade since making his television directorial debut in 2012 with Dark Horse.
Executive producers are Gianni Nunnari, Harald Kloser, Herbert G. Kloiber, Oliver Berben, Martin Moszkowicz, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz, and Jonas Bauer. It is a production by AGC Studios, with Centropolis Entertainment, Hollywood Gang Productions, and Street Entertainment producing.
