Secret Invasion Director on How Super Skrull’s MCU Powers Were Chosen

Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has revealed how each of the super powers used by Gravik in the Disney+ show’s season finale were chosen.

How did Marvel pick which powers Super Skrull would use in Secret Invasion?

Speaking with Variety, Selim spoke about the scene where G’iah and Gravik battle one another and each use a variety of powers harvested from Avengers and other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters. The director revealed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said all the powers were “fair game,” leading to the Secret Invasion team exploring how each power looks and the meaning behind them all.

“Well, simply put, it comes from Kevin Feige, who says, ‘It’s all fair game,'” Selim rvealed. “That’s best expressed in the moment when Gravik takes the vial from Nick Fury, puts it in the computer where it is analyzed, and we see all the pure superpowers ever. That’s like the moment where we’re like, ‘OK, this is going to be something.’

“We storyboard those sequences for month. I had two storyboard artists working on it — Aaron Sows in L.A., who’s a Marvel fanatic, and Ian McCaffrey in Dublin, Ireland, who is a little more of a choreographer and less involved in the MCU. And together, the two of them found a rhythm between superpowers that had meaning and superpowers that had choreography and elegance. Then those storyboards go to stunts, and stunts work out that some of those movements are impossible to do. And then it goes to visual effects [who] say, ‘I know this is what we planned, but it looks funny, so let’s maybe go from this arm to a different arm, because we want it to be more elegant.’ So, the decisions are Kevin Feige, then story and then just practicality.”

The Nick Fury-led Secret Invasion hails from head writer Kyle Bradstreet and director Ali Selim. The series features the return of MCU vets Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle, as they reprise their respective roles as Nick Fury, Talos, Maria Hill, Everett Ross, and Rhodey. Joining them are Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Dermot Mulroney, Killian Scott, and more. All six episodes of the series are now available to stream on Disney+.

Executive producers are Selim, Bradstreet, Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Brian Tucker, Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams, and Brant Englestein.

“In Secret Invasion, set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls,” reads the logline. “Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”
