Oppenheimer Is Christopher Nolan’s First R-Rated Movie in 21 Years
Aside from being his longest, Variety reports that Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer will also be Christopher Nolan‘s first R-rated movie in over two decades.
He last earned the rating with 2002’s Insomnia. Most of Nolan’s previous films — including Dunkirk, Interstellar, and Inception — were given PG-13 ratings.
The highly-anticipated film arrives in theaters on Friday, July 21.
What to Expect in Oppenheimer?
“The IMAX-shot epic thriller thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it,” reads the logline.
Oppenheimer features a star-studded ensemble led by Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, who’s known as the father of the Atomic Bomb. Joining him are Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, and Michael Angarano as Robert Serber.
The film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. Additional cast includes Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine.
Oppenheimer will be distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures. Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing through their Syncopy banner, along with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven.
