France confirm replacement for injured Christopher Nkunku

France have confirmed that Christopher Nkunku will be replaced by Randal Kolo Muani in their World Cup squad.

Nkunku looked set to play a part in his nation's World Cup campaign in Qatar but disaster struck during a training session.

The RB Leipzig player collided with Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga and immediately went down clutching his knee. The injury proved to be a knee strain and has ruled him out of the tournament, forcing Didier Deschamps to call up a replacement.

The manager of Les Blues has decided that replacement will be another young forward who plays in Germany, Kolo Muani.

The 23-year-old joined Frankfurt in the summer after getting 12 goals and four assists in Ligue 1 for Nantes last season, and has made a strong start to life in the Bundesliga. In 14 league matches, the forward has five goals and nine assists, and he's also scored twice in six UEFA Champions League games.

He was handed his first two caps in September, coming off the bench against Austria and Denmark, and will now be aiming to add to that tally at the World Cup.

While he'll only be going as a backup option, he could well see some game time with Karim Benzema far from fully fit having only played 30 minutes of football in the past month.

If Benzema isn't immediately available, Olivier Giroud will most likely start alongside Kylian Mbappe in his place, but Kolo Muani is the only out-and-out striker in the squad other than those three.
