A police officer has lost his job for telling speeding drivers to accept Jesus Christ as their saviour. He was dismissed after drivers complained he wanted to persuade them to accept Jesus Christ.
According to Metro, multiple complaints were received about state trooper Brian L Hamilton, of Indiana, who was pulling speeding motorists over before instructing them to accept big JC.
Hamilton was lecturing drivers in the way of the Lord, but his repeatedly proselytising and handing out religious leaflets, which claimed to detail ‘God’s plan for salvation’, got him the boot.
Indiana State Police terminated Hamilton’s employment after 14-years of service. Authorities claimed the dismissal came after a complaint received in January which suggested he’d questioned the driver’s religion. It was the second complaint of that nature in 18 months.
After the initial complaint in 2014, Hamilton received a formal warning not to question motorist’s religious beliefs.
Douglas G Carter, the State Police Superintendent, said: ‘While I respect Mr. Hamilton’s religious views, I am also charged to respect every citizen’s rights, and the best way forward for the citizens of Indiana, and for Mr. Hamilton, was to end his employment as a state police officer.’
Capt. David R Bursten, of the Indiana State Police, said that residents had communicated their support for and dissapointment that Hamilton had been dismissed.
He added: ‘I don’t think any of us wants to live in a society where any of those officers, on a whim, can turn on red or blue lights and pull you to the side of the road and then try to convert you to their religion.’
