The Idea of You: Michael Showalter to Direct Anne Hathaway-Led Romance Pic
According to Deadline, Amazon Studios has officially enlisted director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) to helm and produce the upcoming film adaptation of The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s romance novel of the same name. Oscar winner Anne Hathaway has been attached to lead the project since last year.
The Idea of You is being written and executive produced by Jennifer Westfelt. It follows the story of a middle-aged woman who unexpectedly finds a connection with one of the most popular boy band members in the world. The only issue is he’s nearly half her age. Production is expected to start this coming October.
The film will be produced by Hathaway for Somewhere Pictures, Lee, Cathy Schulman for Welle Entertainment, Gabrielle Union and Kian Gass for I’ll Have Another, Eric Hayes, and Jordana Mollick.
“Sophie is a 40-year-old divorced mother,” reads the synopsis. “Sophie’s husband Dan left her for a younger woman, and now he has canceled his Coachella trip with their 15-year-old daughter. Sophie picks up the pieces, braving the crowds and desert heat. There, she meets 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of the hottest boy band on the planet, August Moon.”
Showalter is no stranger to the romance genre as he previously directed four romantic comedies, including They Came Together, Hello My Name is Doris, The Big Sick, and The Lovebirds. He is currently nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie after directing four episodes of Hulu’s The Dropout.
