Mad Max: Furiosa Set Photos Reveal Look at Chris Hemsworth's Villain

A new batch of behind-the-scenes photos from the Australia set of Warner Bros. Pictures’ action prequel Mad Max: Furiosa have surfaced online, giving us a new look at Chris Hemsworth’s unnamed villainous character. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.

In addition, during an interview with Sydney Morning Herald, director George Miller confirmed the casting of Quaden Bayles, the young Australian boy who went viral in 2020 after he unfortunately was bullied at school. Miller also revealed that he also first invited Bayles to join Three Thousand Years of Longing.

“It was good for us and it was good for him,” Miller said. “And he did such a good job that he’s got a small role in Furiosa.”

In the Mad Max: Furiosa set photos, the Thor: Love and Thunder actor is once again seen sporting a long hair and beard, while wearing a nose prosthetic. It also provides us our first look at his character’s post-apocalyptic costume.

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus,” reads the synopsis for the upcoming film. “Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

Furiosa is being described as a standalone story that will dive into the origins of the character previously portrayed by Charlize Theron (The Old Guard) before crossing paths with the eponymous antihero of the mothership franchise. The film will be led by Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Endgame), and Tom Burke (Mank). The latter replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.

The Mad Max prequel is written and directed by George Miller, who is co-producing the film along with Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell. Miller’s Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner is also attached to produce.

Even though the film had a poor box-office turnout with a worldwide gross of over $370 million, Mad Max: Fury Road was a critical success, with critics praising its cinematography, production design, and the performances of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, who both had a difficult time during filming. It also won six Oscar awards out of 10 nominations, including Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Costume Design.
