Google to allow parents to remove photos of their children from search results

The world's big technology companies are working on new systems to improve the privacy of young people on the internet.

Posting a photo of a minor on social media without consent can be problematic, and Google has therefore given the option of requesting the removal of photos of under 18s from search results on their site.

Young users will have the option of using this feature as well as their parents and teachers.

However, the company cannot delete all of these images from the internet - on external sites for example - but can remove them from results on the 'Images' feature on their own search engine.

Google have encouraged users to directly contact the owners of external sites if they wish to have images removed.

Requests can be made by filling out a request form, in which you are advised to upload the image in question to help with the search. Once the request is made, it is then reviewed by Google.

If you're over 18 and want to delete a photo in which you were underage at the time it was taken, your request won't be accepted.

Conversely, parents or teachers can request the removal of a photo of a minor if they passed away before reaching the age of 18.

Google have also promised to give explanations if they decide to not delete a photo.
