Timothée Chalamet Share First Photo As Willy Wonka WB’s Musical Prequel
As production continues on Wonka in the UK, Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet took to Instagram to share the first photo from the set of Warner Bros. Pictures’ forthcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical prequel. The photo provides us with our first look at Chalamet as the young version of the titular candy enthusiast. The Dune star is seen donning a brown top hat which looks similar to the one that Gene Wilder wore in the 1971 film. He also pairs that up with a red velvet jacket which somehow also bears some resemblance to Johnny Depp’s costume in the 2005 film.
Based on the character created by Roald Dahl, Wonka will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory. This also marks the first Charlie and the Chocolate Factory adaptation which will not feature Charlie Bucket, which was previously portrayed by Freddie Highmore.
The prequel will be led by Timothee Chalamet as a young version of the eccentric Chocolate Factory owner. The character was previously portrayed by Gene Wilder in the iconic 1971 film, and Johnny Depp in the hit 2005 version. Joining him are Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Simon Farnaby, Rich Fulcher, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Paterson Joseph, Calah Lane, Colin O’Brien, Matt Lucas, Natasha Rothwell, Rakhee Thakrar, and Ellie White.
Wonka is being directed by Paddington‘s Paul King from a screenplay he co-wrote with Simon Farnaby, based on the script by Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson. Producers are Luke Kelly, and David Heyman through his Heyday Films, with Michael Siegel serving as a producer.
The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 17, 2023.
