Chris Evans Explains Why Falcon Is The Right Choice To Be Captain America
Chris Evans explains why Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is the right choice to be the MCU's new Captain America after Steve Rogers.
Chris Evans explains why Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, is the right choice to be Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After spending nearly a decade playing Steve Rogers in the MCU, Evans appeared to make his exit from the shared universe with Avengers: Endgame. The end of the movie saw Steve hand the Captain America shield to Sam, signaling that he will be the MCU's new Captain America.
With The Falcon and The Winter Soldier set to explore Sam's acceptance of the shield, it will also further show why he was the right choice to take over the mantle. Falcon wasn't the only choice to take on the Captain America mantle. The comics saw Bucky Barnes and several others become Captain America long before Falcon, but the MCU bypassed Sebastian Stan's chance to carry the title and shield. This decision stirred some debate within the Marvel fandom at first, but Falcon becoming Captain America ultimately made more sense. Now, Evans is the one explaining why Falcon taking over the mantle was the right decision.
The former MCU star spoke to Variety as part of a big piece about Anthony Mackie's ascension from a supporting character to the next Captain America. Evans told the outlet that Falcon has "answered the call to action time and time again" throughout his MCU story. This is one of the many reasons Evans feels like Falcon is the right choice to be Captain America in the MCU now.
He’s proven his courage, loyalty and reliability over multiple films. Sam has given so much, and he’s also lost a lot too. He believes in something bigger than himself, and that type of humility is necessary to carry the shield.
Evans' reasoning for why Sam Wilson is a worthy successor to Steve Rogers is excellent. Bucky is a super-soldier who is closer to matching Steve's physical abilities, but he's still a former assassin who is trying to reclaim his identity. Meanwhile, Sam was right by Steve's side throughout most of Phase 2 and 3, and he's repeatedly demonstrated the characteristics anyone would want in Captain America. This is part of the reason why The Falcon and The Winter Soldier could be so engaging, as the story is expected to revolve around Sam realizing he's more than worthy to carry the shield next.
Sam becoming the MCU's new Captain America would seemingly set him up for a major role in Phase 4 and beyond. But, it will be interesting to see what happens with the mantle and shield should Chris Evans return. It has been reported that Evans will be back as Captain America, even though he has denied it. Depending on how Steve Rogers potentially returns to the MCU, it's possible he could reclaim the Captain America name. That won't negate the reasons why Falcon is the right choice to take over the mantle for the time being, though, so hopefully The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is the start of many exciting MCU adventures with Falcon as Captain America.
